Record high demand for European patents

April 9th 2026

Demand for European patents reached a historic high in 2025, as the number of applications exceeded 200,000 for the first time. According to figures from the European Patent Office, a total of 201,974 patent applications were filed—an increase of 1.4 percent compared to the previous year.

The increase reflects continued global interest in the European market as a hub for innovation and technological development. Applications from countries outside Europe grew significantly, while the United States and Germany remain the largest contributors. At the same time, China entered the top three countries with the most applications for the first time.

The trend is driven in particular by new technologies. Computer technology remains the largest field, partly due to advances in artificial intelligence and quantum technology. Energy technology—especially batteries—is also experiencing strong growth.

According to EPO President António Campinos, the figures show that Europe remains attractive to companies and inventors worldwide. He also points out that initiatives such as the Unitary Patent make it easier to protect innovation across borders.

Overall, the record highlights intensifying global competition for technological leadership and confirms that Europe continues to play a central role in developing the technologies of the future.
